Initiatives

A Science Park was set up in our school and was inaugurated on 9th November 2014 by Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba, AVSM. It features structures displaying various scientific laws and principles relating to concepts like Angular Momentum, a Square Wheel Cycle, which can roll smoothly keeping the axle moving in a straight line, a Crystal Structure with an array of atoms arranged at uniform intervals and the Vortex where water rotates faster at the periphery rather than at the centre etc.

Science Park is an area managed in a manner designed to promote innovation. It is a physical place that supports university-industry and government collaboration with the intent of creating high technology economic development and advancing knowledge. These parks differ from typical high-technology business districts, in that university/ school research parks, science and tech parks are more organized, planned, and managed.

BALA (Building as Learning Aid) is an innovative approach that transforms school infrastructure into an engaging and interactive learning resource. At Modern School, with its rich legacy and commitment to holistic education, this philosophy is reflected throughout the campus, where every space serves as an opportunity for learning and discovery.

By integrating activity-based learning, child-friendly design, and inclusivity, BALA creates an environment that stimulates curiosity, creativity, and experiential learning for all students, including children with special needs. Through interactive displays, educational murals, learning corners, and thoughtfully designed spaces, the school environment itself becomes a dynamic extension of the classroom.

D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) is a dedicated reading initiative at Modern School that encourages students and teachers to pause their regular activities and engage in independent reading. During these sessions, students are free to choose books based on their interests and reading abilities, fostering a genuine love for reading.

The programme promotes sustained silent reading, helping students develop concentration, comprehension, and critical thinking skills. Beyond reading, it also provides opportunities for students to reflect on and share their reading experiences, nurturing curiosity, imagination, and a lifelong reading habit.

"For last year's words belong to last year's language, and next year's words await another voice."

Words form the foundation of both spoken and written language. Enriching one’s vocabulary enhances an individual’s ability to communicate effectively. Through the A Word a Day initiative, students of Modern School add a new word to their cranium nuggets each day and endeavour to use it meaningfully by framing sentences of their own.

As Julie Andrews beautifully sang, “Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start; when you read you begin with A, B, C, and when you sing you begin with Do, Re, Mi.” Every new word learnt becomes a stepping stone towards greater expression and understanding.

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched—they must be felt with the heart. Words possess this magic. They inspire, connect, comfort, and empower. After all, we live and breathe words.

Cycle Polo was officially introduced at Modern School, Barakhamba Road, on 30 January 2020. The sport was inaugurated by the Principal, Dr V Datta, on the Upper Field in the presence of coaches, sports coordinators, members of the Modern School Equestrian Team, and students of the Middle Wing.

Students were introduced to the specially designed bicycles and mallets used in the game. Combining the excitement of cycling with the skill and strategy of polo, Cycle Polo promotes coordination, balance, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

An innovative and eco-friendly sport, Cycle Polo reflects Modern School's commitment to providing diverse sporting opportunities and enriching the overall development of its students.

As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, Modern School has undertaken a green initiative by placing over 500 air-purifying plants across the campus. These plants not only enhance the beauty of the surroundings but also contribute to improving air quality.

Air-purifying plants help absorb pollutants, dust, and harmful chemicals from the environment while increasing oxygen levels. They are known for their ability to absorb carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and other airborne toxins, creating a healthier and more refreshing atmosphere.

Through this initiative, the school aims to foster environmental awareness and provide students with a cleaner, greener, and healthier learning environment.

"There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man."

Horse riding returned to Modern School's sporting fold after a gap of 32 years, marked by the creation of a dedicated riding arena. The introduction of thoroughbred horses has rekindled an interest in horsemanship among students, offering them a unique opportunity to develop both skill and character.

Beyond being a sport, horse riding teaches patience, kindness, discipline, responsibility, and empathy. Through their interaction with horses, students learn to build trust, appreciate different perspectives and cultivate meaningful bonds. The experience reflects the enduring connection between humans and horses, whose contribution has played a significant role in shaping the course of human history.

At Modern School, horse riding is not merely a sporting activity but a journey of personal growth, confidence, and lifelong learning.

The jewel in the crown of the Modern School façade, the iconic clock—reminiscent of the grandeur of Big Ben—has been reinstalled, restoring a distinctive architectural feature of the campus. More than a timepiece, it stands as a symbol of the school's rich heritage, timeless values and enduring legacy.

A magnificent globe once again occupies pride of place on the front lawns of Modern School after a gap of more than 35 years. Beyond representing the physical geography of our world, it serves as a symbol of the school's global outlook and its commitment to nurturing internationally minded citizens.

The globe reflects Modern School's vision of fostering awareness, understanding, and engagement with the wider world while remaining rooted in its enduring values and traditions.

The History Society of our school has buried Modern School’s first ever ‘Time Capsule’ on 9th November 2014. It contains items showcasing the popular culture – the ideas, the perspectives, and images that shape our world. This activity was done to give an idea to the people of 2044 of our world at large.
